I had a stack of skirting boards in thegarage that we tore out during our home makeover. Therefore, I have decided to use this 1-year-oldbaseboard to customize my laminate bookshelf. I started decorating out myunattractive, laminate bookshelf.
Thefirst step to customize this kind of bookshelf is to raise the bottom a littleso that the mopboards would sit flush with the bottom of the shelf. Therefore,I decided to use some scrap 2x4s left in our garage from last year’srenovation. I just patched them together on the bottom of the bookcase.
In the next step, I predrilled the holesin the 2×4’s and then pierced them directly into the bottom shelf. Doing this helped me raise it, and it also providedme with something to pin my baseboard. After doing that top of the baseboard iseven with the bottom shelf compared to having a lip to it.
In the next step, I flipped some more skirtingboard on its head and trimmed out the upper portion of the bookshelf. I have donethis to flush with the top of the bookshelf, as I wasn’t worried about it getting a little overhang above the top of the shelf.
Afterwards, I had to buy some lattice trimfrom the local hardware storehouse. The cost of this lattice was 28 cents perfoot, and I got enough for both sides and the fronts of all three bookshelves. My total cost for this customization was approximately $4.14.
It is quite difficult to explain here, butI assure you that it makes a difference in softening up all the straight edgesthat the bookshelf had previously.
Then, I added lots of wood putty to the pin-down holesand other spots, as my baseboards aren’t exactly pretty. Then I also utilized someKilz primer and white paint leftover from renovating our stairwell two weeks ago.
Painting is not my favourite thing, but Ihad to do it for my beloved shelf. It took about four coats till it was a solidwhite with no shadows left behind from the dark laminate. It helped me to renovate and customize my laminate bookshelf.
The laminate bookshelf looks so cool inthe room, so much better, and I no longer want to hide it behind a door. Inaddition, right now, my room is looking so neat and organized!
I also decided to use wire baskets boughtfrom the market for decorating my shelf. To make the laminate bookshelf cooler andmore attractive, I used frosted glass jars bought from IKEA. I previously used themon our basement bar storing for peanuts and Hershey kisses.
Then I used my coloured pencils and amason jar for paint pens for decorating the laminate bookshelf. The colouredpencils were hidden in a plastic box, but they are so colourful, so I decided to utilize them as a decoration piece.
